If you are looking for a therapist for yourself, then it is important to feel that you have a choice. You may not be able to decide from information such as this, and so the best way is to shop around. I schedule an initial appointment so that we can get to meet each other and from there you can decide if you want to look further or settle into therapy with me.
Here is some information about me that may help you in deciding whether to come to that initial interview:
In the work that I undertake with individuals and couples; my primary objective is to give my clients the tools to work with outside the sessions. This may take many forms:
- being listened to;
- being able to state needs appropriately;
- managing anxieties;
- dealing with conflicts;
- caring for self and others;
- managing stress or depression;
- or dealing with bereavement and so forth.
To achieve this, some of my work will be using questions to elict family patterns or current repetitive unwanted patterns; some will be using cognitive tools about managing behaviour that is damaging; you may require just being listened to; I may help with some coaching with regard to new skills or thinking patterns.
My aim is not to keep a couple or individual in therapy long term, but to assist in turning the difficulty or situation around sufficiently for you to feel confident about going on. Therefore I don’t require my clients to come at a fixed time each week but work out how to fit our sessions around your work or home life. We may indeed need to do two sessions in one week but equally schedule one a fortnight if that is what is required.
Having trained in addictions counseling (see opposite page), I believe that the 12 step self help programme works for drug/alcohol addictions, and I would always recommend NA and AA meetings for a dependent client. However I will also work with those who do not wish to use this way - provided they are able to come to therapy without being mood altered for the session.
